“I regard the theater as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.”  - Thornton Wilder That’s a great quote for performers and audiences alike. In an effort to share the world of theater with you, the reader, this forum discusses individual aspects of theater at BDACT. But the question at the beginning of it all, is “Why theater in the first place?” Why choose theater as the place to spend your time, your talents, and your financial support?

For some, auditions can be the best and worst parts of the show. You have input into the process, but much of it is out of your control. I don't have space here to give you all of the info available to improve your odds of getting the role.  You can search for common sense auditioning tips online, and there is no shortage of good ideas to help your audition.  Let’s talk about auditioning in general, and specifically at BDACT.

Volunteers are what community theater is all about.  The actors, the technical staff, the backstage workers, the costume crew, the props crew, the sets crew, the box office, the ushers, the concession stand…and for BDACT, even the Board of Directors and its various subcommittees.  Without volunteers none of those areas function. Even the audiences are volunteers!

Over the course of the last 60 Seasons at BDACT there have been several ways to answer that question. In the 1960s, most of the early directors came from within the group who started the theater. Along the way, others outside the original group began to inquire, and sometimes, were even recruited, to direct a show.

The greatest “Achilles Heel” of any community theatre or arts-related enterprise is funding. That’s why many are started with good intentions and high hopes, only to fold in coming years for lack of financial resources. So how has BDACT navigated the rough waters and survived to celebrate our 60th Season? Simply put, we rely heavily upon the generosity of our community members.
