The world of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella is perfect for whimsical, elaborate props. For its staging of the musical this summer, the BDACT production crew leaned in to the task, which included designing a life-size prop horse that could be ridden by Prince Topher (played by Noah Kikkert).

Creating the prince’s noble steed was no small feat, but Phil Miller and Mary Colstad-Miller embraced the challenge with gusto. Phil constructed the horse’s body, ensuring it was sturdy enough to hold the weight of an adult, and mounted it to a rolling base so it could easily be moved on and off stage. Mary then glued together layers of pink insulation foam and carved out the horse’s head and rump, which were attached to the form Phil created.

Once the basic shape was completed, it was coated in plaster to give it a smooth, paintable surface. Mary went to work, painting and crafting the details that bring the horse to life. Those include a flowing mane and tail (and eyelashes!), a beaded bridal and a velvety purple cape (technically a caparison) for even more of a royal touch. For extra authenticity, the horse was even fitted with a leather saddle.

You can see the horse and all of its co-actors in action during performances of Cinderella, from July 31 to August 10 in the BDACT’s Kamps Auditorium.
