BDACT Hosts Lois Ehlert Mural Dedication

Family-friendly Event Celebrates Award-Winning Children’s Author and Beaver Dam Native

The public is invited to a special family-oriented dedication of the BDACT Fine Arts Center mural in honor of Beaver Dam native and Caldecott Award-winning author and artist Lois Ehlert. Her popular works include family favorites Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Growing Vegetable Soup and I Like Orange. The event is hosted by the Beaver Dam Area Community Theatre (BDACT) on Sunday, November 14 from noon until 12:30 p.m. at the theatre building on Maple Street in Beaver Dam.

The 30-minute dedication program will include a special children’s story presentation, a remembrance of Lois presented by her brother Dick Ehlert, and acknowledgment of the many contributors to this mural project. The Beaver Dam Community Library will provide a special children’s giveaway. Families are encouraged to dress for the weather and may bring picnic blankets to sit on.

The Lois Ehlert mural joins one dedicated earlier this fall as part of The Great Wisconsin Quilt Show to Beaver Dam businesswoman and creative force Nancy Zieman. The one-foot square tiles for both murals were painted by more than 200 community members at the theatre during Beaver Dam’s Arts & Peony Festival in June, according to Scott Eberle, a BDACT volunteer coordinating the mural project with renowned artist Stephen Bennett. Beaver Dam businesses Breuer Metal Craftsman built the mural frames and Hometown Glass handled the installation earlier this month.

Nearly 150 one-foot square panels painted by the public in June at the Beaver Dam Arts & Peony Festival were assembled onto a frame made by Breuer Metal Craftsman.
A team from Hometown Glass lent their expertise to raise the mural into position on the east side of the BDACT Fine Arts Center.
